Philosopher’s Wall

The Philosopher’s Wall: A Perspective Prism emerges from a deep look into the history of alchemy, a precursor to today’s chemistry, to connect to the Philosopher’s Stone which was thought by many to be made of a common substance found everywhere but unrecognized and unappreciated. The quest for the stone encouraged alchemists from the Middle ages to the end of the 17th century to examine in their laboratories numerous substances and their interactions. This kind of curiosity and experimentation inhabits our artXarchitecture studio.

—Philosopher’s Stone Alchemy

Making connections between art and architecture, The Philosopher’s Wall connects not only art and architecture, but the Actual and Virtual, visible and invisible, linear and non-linear, life and death. The wall mirrors and moves between the Actual and Virtual intersected by the hypercube. The cube engages both sides as a form of contraction and expansion through the dimensionality of time. While the Actual maps our frame of familiarity, the Virtual transforms the hypercube into the crystal reflecting its many possibilities and impossibilities.

“We begin with a plan. Ichnos: ‘track, footstep’; graphia: ‘drawing.’ A body in the (hidden) act of writing itself against the ground. Ichnographia: the etymology is misleading, because what the plan reveals is not the building’s footstep, the slow weight of its mass sinking into the ground, but instead the thickness of its walls, the proportions of its space. An entire world is contained in a plan, the whole of a building’s figure revealed one level  at a time, an abstraction that can never be seen but that is the very choreographic sequence that the body knows and follows through space, aware or unaware.”
